Honorable Mention Foot of Africa Surgeon50 Omari stands on one leg in the baobab’s shade, the black foot planted in the African dust. Across the arch, an army of ants marches, red as sunburned British infantry, While Omari gazes at the empty horizon, the army briefly swarms the foot before returning to forage in the dust and twigs. A solitary ant near the Achilles is out of step. It bites. The blunted tip of Omari’s spear crushes it against black skin, leaving a smudge for the ants to remove. The horizon has held Omari’s gaze, but its emptiness betrays no response to his watching. The foot remains immobile, Unchanged except for a faint white scratch, and beneath the skin, a poison.
